![]() There has been a real shift in the panoply of the American musical, where shows eschew the usual formulas and displays and cater to a darker, meaner, leaner version. Antonio Rodriguez, Hannah Whitley, Nyla Watson, and Dominique Kempf in “Hadestown,” North American Tour 2023. Plus, the image of Regina biting into an apple self-sacrificially would be so rich and full-circle.Belén Moyano, J. It could be the only act of selfless love Cora ever shows Regina lmao. This would then give us a moment (of closure for Regina and depth for Cora) where Cora actually finds a way to free her daughter from the Underworld in spite of the rules, going against Hades putting her position as Queen in jeopardy. I think we could see something like Hook being dragged to the underworld, then before Emma can sacrifice herself for Hook (bc no-one wants to see that lezbihonest), Regina bites into an apple or something effectively sacrificing herself for Emma (taking Emma’s place). Unlike hades, she’s known to show mercy – when people offer to sacrifice themselves to bring back their loved ones, she usually allows it. “When Alcestis offered her own life in place of her dying husband’s, Persephone sent her back from the Underworld and spared them both.” This could definitely be something we see in 5b if the rumours are true and either Hook or Regina (or both) ‘die’ in the midseason finale. She would also be the one (along with Hades) who gets to judge whether souls are allowed to leave or have to remain in the Underworld forever. ![]() Now, if Cora’s actually the Queen of the Underworld it means she could’ve been the one who sent the fury after Robin. Wouldn’t it just be A++ Cora to find a way to finally become Queen in death? Wouldn’t it be kind of amazing and tragic at the same time that she achieved her ‘happy ending’ in Hell? Humanity begins to starve, so Zeus is forced strike a deal with Hades whereby Persephone is allowed to return to her mother for part of the year… Demeter continues to curse the Earth whenever her child returns to the Underworld – a period of time that essentially becomes Winter.ĭespite all the abuse her mother hurled at her, Regina never gave up on Cora and believed she could come back from the darkness long enough to love her til the very end – in much the same way we saw Henry believe in Regina and I’m sure we’ll see both Regina and Henry believe in Dark Swan.Īlthough I don’t think we’ll see a direct correlation between Persephone and Cora I do think we will see some of these same themes and iconic moments played out symbolically. They have a complicated and beautiful bond – Demeter never stops trying to bring Persephone back from the Underworld and is unsuccessful for many an age – during which time she curses Earth to make the soil barren. So what could the relevance of all this be? Well Persephone is really most famous for her relationship with her mother Demeter. She quite literally ate the forbidden fruit, which draws obvious parallels to Regina and her undying relationship with apples. Sadly, Persephone is tricked into eating pomegranate seeds and is thus forced to stay. The myth of the underworld is that while living, you can leave so long as you haven’t eaten any food there. There’s also an interesting parallel revolving around fruit. Regina loves her honeycrisp apple tree you guys… ![]() Not to mention the Mills family obsession… Ring any bells? There’s been a lot of the darkness transfiguring people into trees so far this season… There’s also an interesting part of Persephone’s myth where she turns people into trees (most prominently those who she believes Hades is trying to seduce). Persephone’s mother was Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, making her “the miller’s daughter”. Interestingly, Persephone also went by the name Cora. I did some Greek mythology googling and discovered that Hades’ wife was a Goddess he abducted called Persephone. We all know we’re going to the Underworld in some capacity in 5b and that Cora is coming back for at least one episode.
